Sugar & Spice was founded in 1993 by Marietjie van Deventer. At the time Marietjie was a school teacher who decided to pursue her passion for food and baking and as a mother of two small children, she started baking from home. The shelves of the small shop in the Game centre were filled with fresh goodies – from Marietjie’s and other home bakers’ kitchens. From then until 2017, her and her husband Soois had grown their business from the first tiny cake shop in the Game Centre to four shops and three bakeries, including Chatterley’s Cakes & Cookies, in the Sanlam Centre, at the entrance to Pick & Pay.
After 24 years of ownership the Van Deventer’s sold their business to the Kraftt family. We strive to continue running the business on the same sound biblical principles and continue to provide our customers with the same delicious products that they have come to love, all while improving and adding new products on a regular basis.
In July 2021, Chatterley’s Cakes & Cookies was looted and totally destroyed during the unrest in KZN. With a lot of prayer and hard work, the shop was renamed, revamped and reopened. The shop was renamed Sugar Shack Bakery- a beautiful, floral and fresh take on the previous bakery.
True to the “Spice” in our name, we provide customers with mouth-watering biltong, dry wors, and a range of different flavoured biltong sticks such as chilli and chutney. We have recently added yellow fat biltong, straight from the veld, as well as a range of game biltong in different shapes and flavours.
We also sell delicious sauces such as Mell’s Sauces, Sansies Mango Chutney and Erna’s Mustard.
At the end of 2023, Sugar & Spice was taken over by the Janse Van Vuuren family, bringing along with it a new brand: “Sugar & Spice – Cake, Bake Boutique”.
The community can still expect the same high-quality sweet and savory treats from us. We look forward to continuing to serve our customers with excellence.
